Reading Teacher Endorsement
Reading teacher endorsement candidates take these courses.
- Reading and writing instruction and improvement
- Reading in the content areas for middle level and secondary teachers
- Diagnosis and assessment in reading
- Developmental and remedial materials and resources for reading
- Developmental and remedial instruction and support in reading
- Literacy development for English Language Learners
- Children’s literature
- Reading clinic
Endorsements are added to the teacher’s current certificate. Holders of Type 03 Elementary certificates are able to add the K-4 reading teacher endorsement and the 5-8 reading teacher endorsement. To receive the 5-8 reading endorsement the candidate must already have 6 semester hours of middle school work and a middle school endorsement on their certificate. Those without the middle school endorsement must also take two courses in middle school methods and adolescent psychology.
Teachers with Type 09 Secondary certificates are able to add the secondary 9-12 reading teacher endorsement and the 5-8 middle level reading teacher endorsement although it is only valid for grades 6-8 which is within the range of the certificate. To receive the 6-8 reading endorsement, candidates must already have 6 semester hours of middle school work and a middle school endorsement on their certificate. Those without the middle school endorsement must also take two courses in middle school methods and adolescent psychology.
Teachers with Type 04 Early Childhood Education certificates may add the K-4 reading teacher endorsement.
Candidates for the endorsement also have to fulfill field experience and state mandated testing
requirements.
