Certificate of Special Study

The Certificate of Special Study (CSS) is designed for the post-MLIS professional interested in retooling, refreshing, or simply reconnecting with other professionals and future professionals in a graduate study learning environment.

As a premier graduate school of library and information science, we offer MLIS graduates an opportunity to engage in graduate coursework with an entitlement to a Certificate of Special Study. This is a complement to the high quality professional development workshops and regional, state, national, and international conferences available to librarians worldwide.

The Graduate School of Library & Information Science Certificate of Special Study offers:

  • a five course plan of study shaped with a faculty advisor specializing in the candidate’s field of concentration.
  • three years to complete five three-credit hour courses
  • an Exit Interview with a faculty advisor
  • award of the Certificate of Special Study at a graduation event that also honors the graduates of the GSLIS master’s degree program.
  • notation of the Certificate of Special Study and the area of concentration on the candidate’s Dominican University transcript.

Who would benefit from Certificate of Special Study Concentrations?

  • Youth Services or Children’s Librarians preparing for a school liaison position
  • School library media specialists interested in academic or public library positions.
  • Adult Services, Youth Services, or Children’s Services public librarians retooling for another departmental position.
  • Librarians or information specialists focusing on technology, digital records, and the human-computer interface.
  • Librarians or information specialists seeking management, administration and leadership studies.
  • Librarians or information specialists interested in community engagement, advocacy, and activism, and want to be updated and involved with like-minded professionals.
  • Librarians or information specialists interested in specialized areas of knowledge management, cataloging, and archival studies.
