at
Dominican University

In spring, 2009, The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools extended Dominican University’s accreditation to include the doctorate in Library and Information Science. This action allows the first cohort of students to begin the Ph.D. program in fall of the 2009-2010 academic year.

The mission of the doctoral program is to educate dynamic leaders in the field of library and information science who are poised to bridge the theory-practice divide and be the field’s creative innovators in the 21 st Century.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Library and Information Science at Dominican:

  • Offers the professional doctorate in a format that allows executives and senior managers to complete their degree without interrupting their careers
  • Recognizes that scholars today acquire knowledge though research, through synthesis, through practice, and through teaching (as described by Ernest L. Boyer, famed educator at The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching)
  • Focuses on applied research that practicing librarians and information specialists need
  • Extends opportunities for research that informs and improves teaching in an academic setting
  • Provides an approach to the curriculum and dissertation that is structured and systematic, allowing individuals to complete their research and earn the doctor of philosophy in three years
