Admissions Requirements
Admission to the Brennan School of Business is open to those who hold a bachelor’s degree in any field with an appropriate general education component from an accredited institution. No prior business courses are required. The admission committee bases its decision on the applicant’s total academic record, satisfactory scores on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), or the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) for the CIS degree only, two references from the applicant’s professors and/or supervisors, and pertinent information from the student’s application.
Students may apply online or download an application from Dominican University’s website at www.business.dom.edu. Applications may also be obtained by contacting the Brennan School of Business at (708) 524-6810 or at gradbus@dom.edu. Completed applications should be submitted to the Brennan School of Business, Dominican University, 7900 West Division Street, River Forest, IL 60305. Students may enter the program at the beginning of the fall term (September), spring term (January), the first summer term (May), or the second summer term (July).
Provisional Acceptance
In certain instances, a student may be provisionally accepted if all admission requirements are
met except the submission of acceptable GMAT scores (or GRE scores for CIS applicants). The
applicant must submit a letter requesting provisional acceptance along with all other admission
documents. A student who is accepted provisionally may take classes during this candidacy period
for a maximum of one semester. If the student has not submitted acceptable GMAT (or GRE for the CIS
program) scores by the end of this provisional candidacy period, the student will be restricted
from enrolling in additional courses until acceptable scores have been received by the Brennan
School of Business and the student has been fully accepted.
Request for Waiver of Admission Test
Applicants who have earned an advanced degree from an accredited institution may request that
their admission test requirements (either GMAT or GRE) be waived. Applicants must submit this
request in writing to the admission committee prior to admission.
GMAT Review
In order to assist our prospective students with preparation for the GMAT, the Brennan School of Business offers a non-credit GMAT preparation class. The class is offered during the fall and spring semesters. Instruction takes place at Dominican University’s River Forest Main Campus and the class meets once a week for eight weeks. All materials, including the GMAT review book, are included in the class fee. For additional information regarding the GMAT preparation class, please contact the Brennan School of Business office at (708) 524-6810 or gradbus@dom.edu.
Foundation Course Waivers
Foundation courses required for degree programs may be waived if students have successfully completed equivalent course work at another accredited institution as part of their previous studies. In order to be eligible for waivers, students must have achieved a grade of B or better in an equivalent three-credit course. Waivers for GSB 611 Economics for Managers and GSB 612 Managerial Accounting each require completion of two classes (six credits) of appropriate undergraduate course work with a grade of B or better.
Original transcripts are required for consideration of waivers. Transcripts will be reviewed for waivers at the time of admission but final approval of waivers may be withheld for students accepted provisionally until acceptable GMAT scores have been submitted. Core courses and electives cannot be waived.
Transfer of Credit
Students who have completed relevant graduate courses at another accredited institution prior to matriculation at Dominican may transfer up to six semester hours of credit toward the MBA, MSA, MS/CIS, or MS/MIS degree. All transfer credits are subject to approval and no transfer credit will be awarded unless an official transcript is provided showing that a grade of B or better was achieved.
Returning for a Second Degree
Students currently enrolled in one of the degree programs in the Brennan School of Business who wish to apply for a second degree must submit a new application and a new personal statement. All other required documentation such as transcripts, recommendation letters and GMAT and TOEFL scores submitted for the first degree will be presented with the new materials to the admission committee for review.
Brennan School of Business alumnae/i seeking a second degree must submit a new application, a personal statement and two letters of recommendation. Transcripts and GMAT and TOEFL scores used to evaluate the original application will be presented with the new materials to the admission committee for review. International students seeking to continue on or return for a second degree must also submit a current financial statement in addition to the other documents specified.
Students who have earned their MBA but wish to complete an additional concentration may return to enroll in elective classes after graduation. No admission paperwork is required in these circumstances.
Student-at-Large Status
An applicant wishing to enroll as a student-at-large, rather than as a degree-seeking student, must submit a student-at-large application, an application fee and official transcripts. Student-at-large status is permissible for one semester only and for a maximum of six-credit hours. International students are not eligible to apply for student-at-large status unless they are already in the United States. If eligible, they must also submit a current financial statement and official TOEFL scores. International students admitted under this status will be issued an I-20 for one semester of study only, during which time they must complete all outstanding requirements for regular admission and must be admitted as a regular student by the beginning of the next semester in order to maintain I-20 status.
Student Referrals
Current students are encouraged to refer to the Brennan School of Business other qualified
individuals interested in a graduate business degree. If the referred person is accepted and
matriculates into a Brennan School of Business graduate program, the referring student may be
eligible for textbook reimbursement of up to $250 in the first semester of the new student’s
enrollment. The referring student must be identified on the new student’s application to be
eligible and may receive credit for only one new student
per semester.
Special-Needs Services
At Dominican University, no qualified individual with a disability will be excluded from participation in or be denied the benefits of the services, programs or activities of the university. The dean of students’ office is a university resource promoting barrier-free environments (physical, program, information, attitude) and assisting the university in meeting its obligation under federal statutes and school tradition in regard to the rights of students with disabilities.
The Office of the Dean of Students coordinates the provision of services necessary and appropriate for students with special needs. Upon receipt of appropriate documentation of disability, this office assists by providing or arranging appropriate auxiliary aids and services, reasonable accommodations, academic adjustments and consultation. In some instances, the dean of students’ office acts as a liaison with other appropriate state and federal agencies. Students are expected to meet individually with the dean of students to determine what specific services and reasonable accommodations are needed. It is the responsibility of the student to make requests for auxiliary aids or special services at least three weeks prior to the start of a program or class.
