"The Love of Learning and the Learning of Love"

How is the Christian and Dominican ideal of love-in-practice realized in an intellectual environment today? In the Dominican tradition, St. Thomas (among others) portrayed the quest for truth as a work of charity and reciprocally as education in charity, arguing that teachers must love their students (disciples) as well as their disciplines, but also love one another. In this paper, I explore how a community of learning today can also be a community of love, from the development of courtesy and civility on campus and in the classroom to mutual aid, support and encouragement among faculty, staff and administration, as well as among the students themselves.
