Visiting Assistant Professor in English/African-American Literature

Full-time, non-tenure-track, one-year renewable position (for two years, maximum), to begin
August 2008. Ph.D. in English required, with a specialization in African-American literature and
experience teaching composition preferred. Experience teaching Southern literature desirable.
Teaching load is 3/3; primary responsibility is to teach composition courses and a survey-level
course in African-American literature. All faculty members are invited to contribute to the
University’s Core Curriculum.

Newly-announced faculty position in Spanish, initially visiting but convertible to tenure-track, at either the Associate or Assistant Professor level beginning fall 2008. Area of specialization is open, but the position requires some leadership experience. Applicants must have Ph.D. in Spanish, evidence of superior ability in university teaching, and a commitment to scholarship. The successful candidate must be prepared to teach all levels of language (including Business Spanish), as well as Hispanic American and Peninsular literatures and cultures, and have native or near-native proficiency in both Spanish and English. Teaching load is three undergraduate classes per semester. All faculty members are invited to contribute to the University’s Core Curriculum. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience.

Primary Purpose // Position Summary: To assist the Head Teacher in providing a warm, nurturing environment in which the children can grow physically, emotionally, and intellectually. Job Components//Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
- To assist the Head Teacher in designing and maintaining a classroom environment which is warm, safe, inviting, interesting, and stimulating.
- To assist the Head Teacher in offering a program which allows children to meet and grow in regard to their emotional, physical, intellectual and social needs both as individuals and as part of a larger group.
- To work with the Head Teacher in gathering and arranging materials for lessons.
- To attend and participate in staff meetings.
- To establish and maintain good communication with parents on a daily basis.
- To interact with the children and to encourage their involvement in all activities.
- To be actively involved with the children while they are on the playground in order that large muscles development can be observed and planned for.
- To observe and be able to report significant individual and group behavior to the Director or Assistant Director.
- To work with the Head Teacher in the classroom so that discipline and rules are consistent.
- To suggest items for orders of equipment and supplies to Head Teacher.
- To implement and give feedback on monthly lessons based on program goals and observation of children.
- To follow through on opportunities for professional growth and share information with other staff. You must complete at least 15 hours of continuing education hours per year.
- To follow guidelines in the Dominican University Handbook and the Center Employee Handbook in
regard to maintaining employment. Most especially they involve:
…Arriving on time. This will be documented through the time clock.
…Complying with applicable federal, state, or local laws, regulations, or ordinances. In this case, those which govern the operation of a child care facility.
…Remaining awake and alert in the classroom during nap time. - Performs other duties as requested, delegated or assigned.
- Must have the ability to relate joyfully and sensitivity to children.
- Must give evidence of sufficient security and judgment to handle crisis situations.
- Must have the physical stamina to work with young children for extended periods of time.
- Must be willing to work with other staff members to build a supportive team. Most particularly this would include the Head Teacher, Teacher Assistants, Director, Assistant Director and student workers.
- Must meet or exceed requirements as set forth in DCFS Licensing Standards
- Requires a Baccalaureate Degree in Early Childhood Education (or a related field) or an Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education with related experience.
